Not that long ago I was in Sydney for boards stock. Marlon from Wake mag was up there and we got the call from a good friend Paul Boyd. He said lets go for a ride on Port Hacking. I'm always pumped to go ride with boydy because no one loves it more. I thought Marlon was shooting photo's but the cheeky bugger must of got some video as well. Editor’s note: If you’ve had a chance to check out the Alliance 10-Year issue, then you probably know how crazy of a year 2009 was for Chris O’Shea. If you haven’t seen the issue yet, go find it ASAP. To put it simply, Chris-O’s stories from that year were so long, extensive, and crazy that we didn’t have close to enough room in the magazine for them. Thank goodness for the Internet! Here, in his own words, is Chris-O’s recollection of the craziness that took place in and around Brostock 2009. Kids, there’s a valuable lesson (or two, or three) in here. Don’t try this at home.

2009 was a year unlike any other for Chris O'Shea

Brostock was definitely a wild experience for me that year. Danny Harf took the cake once again. It was the biggest prize money event I have ever been involved in and I actually almost didn’t even get to ride this event because I ended up going to jail on the first night. Long story short we were all just having a few drinks and I ended up jumping on a jet-ski to go visit some friends on another houseboat when the cops came out of nowhere and nabbed me for being intoxicated and operating the ski. They were super bitter and just not cool at all with the whole scene of Brostock, so off to jail I went.

Powell is in the middle of the desert and I was in a cell the rest of that day and all night with all these crazies who were tripping on peyote and this one dude was puking all night and it was just super gnarly. The next day they moved me to a cell with all these huge Samoan dudes and the cops were saying I’d be there for like two days. I decided to have a shower while I was there and got all soaped up just in time for the Samoan’s to start waking up and there I was frantically trying to rinse the soap off, but the shower only gave you like a squirt of water each time you pushed the button so I was fully freaking out. Luckily I escaped a horror story there and got back into my orange jumpsuit. The crew from Brostock convinced the helicopter pilot (who was there to fly for the cameras) to fly them up to the prison to get me out. When they got there the authorities refused to release me so I was stuck for a while longer.

Finally I was released, but I had missed my helicopter ride back to the event and had no way of contacting anybody because there’s no cell service on the lake. So I was literally wandering through the desert in nothing but my boardshorts: no phone, no wallet, nothing. I thought I was going to die in the desert with no idea which way Lake Powell was. Eventually I found a service station and asked like 50 people to help me out but no one was very enthusiastic about helping out the kid with long hair and a beard with nothing but boardshorts who was just wandering through the desert. Finally I found this one super religious guy who just came back from some sort of church mission in Australia so he felt like it was his duty to help me out, so I finally made it back to Lake Powell and caught a ride back to the houseboats.

When I got there they were literally about to scratch my name from the running order because they knew I was in jail but I surprised them all and literally showed up, threw on my board and then went out and killed it. I made it through the first round and ripped again and before I knew it I was in the finals. I ended up making some decent money in the event, which helped to pay for all the court fees and other crap I got from being sent to jail. I actually had to go back to jail after the event for another 58 hours where I got thrown into this one cell with 30 people in it. Then they assigned me to another cell with a bunky (bunk bed) and as they walked me in everyone was yelling and making all this noise as I walked through. Through the bars I saw my cellmate had “NO HOPE” tattooed across his fists and the first thing he says is “I got this f@#$%& for a cellmate!” I’m just standing there freaking out thinking I can’t bitch out now, I gotta stand up for myself so I don’t get the crap beat out of me or raped or something. So I looked right back at him and said, “F$*& you, you f#$*&%@ c&*$!” That more or less caused a fight to break out and this dude was getting his head smashed against a pole… gnarly stuff. It only got broken up by the cops because they started shooting at them with these little bean bag bullets.

After my time in jail I finally got release only to get dropped by Hyperlite right after, so shit was going really bad, but then I got the call saying I was the Rider of the Year which was a HUGE dose of encouragement that I needed badly at that point. 2009 was like the best and worst year all in one.

There is no giving without receiving, just as there is no taking without loss. And in today’s world there's a lot of both going on. Chris O’Shea dives into the realities of your actions from his newly acquired orientation as Company wakeboards distributor.

The Currency of Today.

As we wrap up 2010 - Dean Smith; World Champ, Harley Clifford winning Parks’ ‘Double or Nothing’ competition and me, Alliance magazine’s ‘Rider of the year’ in 09. I think to myself how far, in Australia, the sport has come. From my first event back in 1997 to now.

Back then Wake Mag was a newspaper. The cover was an ‘Air Railey’ behind an outboard with a low-pole. It’s amazing how far it’s come from those days, from no real industry to speak of, with Waterskiers writing it off as a ‘Fad’, to nowadays, with new cable parks popping up everywhere, Pro contests that US riders come over for and two of the most progressive mags in the world. Also, in my opinion, one of the best wakeboard movies of all time about to drop worldwide by Australia’s very own (Josh Robinson).

But how did we get here? How did this country produce some of the best wakeboarders in the world? Answer: Through those involved putting back in. Giving back to the sport that has giving so much to them. Riders like Daniel Watkins, Brett Eisenhauer and Josh Sanders being pro active and putting there own time and money back into the sport and showing us what can be done with passion. It’s people like Dimi (Boarder Mag creator and The APTW director) and Mick Watkins (Ex-Boarder & Wake Mag Editor, APTW creator and now Prowake Director) busting their arse for the love of the sport. Whether it’s running events, helping build rails or running a magazine these guys have spent countless hours of their free time making the sport better. As a collective, the industry has worked so hard to get to where it/ we is/are now but I fear it’s all about to come crashing down.

Why? Because, as much as the internet has helped our industry and sport, it’s now
killing it. Killing the Australian industry that so many have dedicated their lives to make. How? Through an ‘everyman for himself’ attitude. A take what you can without care of its consequences stance.

With our strengthening dollar comes the benefits of online buying from the states and while that may seem like a good idea for your bank balance it is not a good thing for the Australian Wakeboarding industry. “Yeah, so what, I can save myself a little money” Yes, but at what cost? Shops are going out of business and they will continue to do so if everyone buys through Over seas websites. And without the shops you’re
without a place to take warranties, without a place to look at product, to get the best service and advice, to demo boards. If we loose shops, we will loose distributors. Distributors like Wayne Ritchie (Sports Image: Hyperlite, Byerly, Humanoid and Ronix) & Mick Neville (Masterline: Liquid Force, O’Brien and ML Boarding) losing dollars that they put back into the sport through Event sponsorship, Rider sponsorship and Magazine advertising. No Rider Sponsorship means no opportunity for Aussie riders to grow and potentially win in front of the world stage.

Wayne Ritchie was the one that helped me get started, help me to live my dream and he was Daniel Watkins’ first sponsor all those years ago too. Mick Neville has done so much for this sport and the youth coming through today; Riders like Mitch Langfield (Jnr world Champ) Harley Clifford (US Pro Tour champ) would have never have had their opportunities if it weren’t for Mick Neville.

So if you say you love wakeboarding and you think it’s rad that there is all this cool stuff going on then you have to realise that going on ebay and/or searching for a deal from America is harmful to your Industry. So let’s not throw it all away for the sake of saving a few dollars. Please get behind your local stores and they will get behind you. We are all Aussie and we should be proud of our industry, I know I am. It’s up to you to keep the dollars in Australia. Next time you look for the better deal outside of Australia; think about your sport and its future before you’re wallet. Do it for your industry today, and your kid’s industry tomorrow.

I just got back from a week in texas. The first half of the week we kicked it with Gabe and then the second half we went down to shredtown. I had a blast shreding with some new friends. We hit up a lot of winching spots that were supper fun. Winching is pretty new for me and got me supper stocked. Thank everyone who made it happen. Gabe and Shredtown hooked us up big time. It took several attempts to get this shot. We tried a couple of different angles and I wasn't 100% on what we were getting. Don't get me wrong the shots were sick but I felt there was a better angle still not explored. Dimi said I know how we need to shoot this trick. The hardest thing was making sure I didn't spray the camera that was on the end of a poll that dimi was holding. While on a tube that was way to small for him. haha why make it any easier. Crazy that camera survived and crazy how sick dimi is at getting the right angle on what trick you want to shoot. There was a lot of work that went into this one shot. This is what makes wakeboarding art.This is what makes me tick.
